Jan 12--Dear Elder

Dear Matt,

Hi, and thank you for the wonderful letter that you sent last week.  I really enjoyed hearing about what you are doing.  I don't ask as many questions in my letters than maybe I should because I think that you know the questions I have in my mind.  How are you doing?  Who are you teaching?  What are you studying and pondering?  How is your companion?  I love it when you tell me about all those things and whatever else is important to you.  I am glad that you and your companion could go on splits with the other missionaries and help them to get along with each other.  I hope that they are doing better.

I really don't have much to say about this week.  Sunday evening we tried to make a video to send to you for your birthday, but it didn't work out.  Monday night, we were able to make the video and I sent it to you via snail mail on Thursday.  I really hope that you get it.  I don't even care if you get it for your birthday, just so long as you get it at all, ha ha.  It is a long, kind of boring video--74 minutes, so you can watch it bit by bit if you want.  We just wanted to send you something more than usual.  If you do get it by your birthday, that would pretty much be a miracle.  Also, Sunday night we had a family home evening lesson given by me.  It was on keeping our covenants.  Dad is giving the lesson this coming week.

This week I also did monthly shopping and other vague, uninteresting things.  I worked very hard at the high school to help the special needs kids that I track to get good grades.  Thursday was the last day of the semester.  The great thing about that is that the kids and I got Friday off.  The sad thing is that Dad didn't :(  Still, Friday was very fun.  Elizabeth and her two little girls came to visit me and Katrina.  Katrina was so sweet and played with the girls and kept them happy while Elizabeth and I painted plaster nativity figures that I got Elizabeth's family for Christmas.  Thomas hung out with Jon till five.  They shopped and did errands and then barbequed pork chops.  I had a little taste of one, and it was delicious.  When Dad came home, he and I went to the temple and it was a wonderful experience.  After that we went home and watched North and South which is not a movie about the civil war, but a movie about a young woman who moves from south England to north.  We really enjoyed it.  Miriam, Katrina, and Thomas went to the movie theater and watched "Saving Mr. Banks" which is a movie that I really like.

Also this week, I have been going over your letters for the year, Matt, and compiling excerpts of them to give to Brother Sales to put in the ward history.  The excerpts I am choosing are the ones about your missionary work and your thoughts about missionary work and the gospel.  It is slow going, and I am now in September of your letters.  It is good to skim through your letters, Matt, and see your growth and the lessons you have learned.  Thank you so much for taking the time to write to us.  I know that it must be very hard to do.

Tomorrow we are going to Rick and Kelly's ward to hear Ben's pre-mission talk.  He goes into the MTC on Wednesday, I believe.  We have to leave at 7:00 in the morning to get to their 9:00 church in time.  Today I made soup and a nice green salad to bring to the farewell.  I have also cleaned, worked on your history, and even read a bit.  I am reading North and South because the series was so good, I wanted to try the book.  Now I think that I am going to cut Thomas's hair.  Oh, we also went to Thomas's basketball game which they won, but he says that's because they were playing ninth graders and that when they play their fellow tenth graders, they probably won't do so well, ha ha.

Ben's Farewell

Other random things.  I've been getting more sleep lately, hooray!  Oh, Miriam broke up with Preston.  It looks like it's for good this time, although you can never be real sure.  She works less, now, and just started a new semester.

Okay, now its Sunday evening and we are home from Ben's farewell. I drove up to their house while Dad slept because he didn't get much sleep last night.  Ben gave a very good talk about spiritual learning and worldly learning, the importance of each, and reconciling the two.  After their meetings we went to their house for lunch and to visit.  My cousin, Wallace's oldest daughter, lives fairly close to them now, and she and her family were there, so it was nice to reconnect with them.  Jessica and Henry were there. Sadly, Elizabeth and her family couldn't come.  Still, it was a very enjoyable time.  When we got home, everyone slept for an hour or so, but we are all awake now.  I think we will probably have a family home evening lesson given by Dad tonight.  That will be nice.  Elizabeth is planning a family reunion in July.  The cabin we will all be staying at is very nice, so that should be fun.

Well, Matt, please tell us what you've been thinking, teaching, and doing over this last week, and have a wonderful week to come.  Remember that Heavenly Father and your family love you very much!

Love,
Mom

Dec 29 Dear Elder

Dear Elder,

Hi, how are you?  It was so wonderful to Skype with you!  My watched had stopped, so I still thought it was 2:30 when I saw you'd tried to Skype us.  No wonder Dad kept saying that we had to get on Skype, ha ha!  I'm so glad you didn't have to wait long before I saw you'd been calling.  Like I said, I really enjoyed the time we had to Skype with you.  I thought it was the best Skype session ever.  Was it fun to see Lily?  She's getting so big, isn't she?  How did the rest of your Christmas day go?  I hope it was wonderful.

On Christmas Eve, we went to the movies.  It was a Christmas present from Cassandra and Emerson, and we had lots of fun.  In the evening we all got in our pajamas and did gifts from the heart before Lily went to bed.  Jon had Lily and gave her her own set of keys to play with.  Lily gave Katrina some bookmarks with pictures of her on them.  Cassandra gave Jon some certificates for Skyping sessions, Dad gave Miriam a certificate to detail her car inside and out.  I gave Cassandra a "year of Cassandra" book with journal entries of her from Dec 1989 to 1990, Katrina gave Thomas three hours of her time to do whatever he wants to do, Thomas gave me a sweet note that I will enclose because I loved it, Miriam scraped ice off Emerson's windshield the whole time they were here so he wouldn't have to, Emerson gave Dad a shooting outing, They were all sweet gifts, and we had a wonderful time.  After Lily went to bed that night, we ate our Christmas dinner which was steak, potatoes, broccoli, and salad.  Also each person had their own bottle of Martinelli's sparkling apple juice.  It was a very fun evening.  Before bed, we read the Christmas story and sang a couple of carols.

We really enjoyed having Cassandra and Emerson over on Christmas day.  It was wonderful watching Lily open her toys.  She got a music box record player.  She calls the little plastic records that come with it "DVD's."  We also got her a bath tub for her baby doll which Cassandra put in the car for her to open when she got home.  Since then, Cassandra says she's played with it and loves it.  Jonathan bought her a Darth Tater, too.  She was in gift heaven.  We also got a gift for a little baby boy that they are expecting, too.  It was fun to buy a cute little baby boy outfit.  Everyone had lots of fun opening presents.  Miriam gave everyone a gift, wasn't that sweet?  After we opened presents, Jon made us a delicious breakfast of egg and sausage bagels.  We opened Christmas crackers and ate our breakfast, and had a wonderful time.  Of course the highlight of the day was Skyping with you, Matt.  That evening, Dad, Emerson, Cassandra, Katrina, Thomas, and I all played a board game and Preston came over and he and Miriam watched a movie together.

On Thursday, we got to take care of Lily while Cassandra and Emerson went to the temple.  Dad and I took her to Costco, and then Katrina played with her, and then she went down for a nap.  It was so fun!  That evening, Emerson and Cassandra treated us all to dinner.  We had a wonderful time, the ten of us including Jon and Preston.  Lily was so cute, when Cassandra told her that her meal was macaroni and cheese, Lily cried, and said, "I want pasta!"  She wasn't happy until Cassandra called it pasta, ha ha.

Friday was our anniversary, and that morning, Emerson's brother came to visit so that he and Emerson could spend some time together.  After his brother got here, the guys went target shooting.  Preston and his step dad, Chris, came, too.  Miriam was the only one of us girls who went. While the were gone, Cassandra and Katrina cleaned the house for me for an anniversary gift while I played outside with Lily.  She loved the hammock, and the slides, but most of all she loved the "airplane" swing.  We had so much fun!  I also got out the little picnic table and we'd take little breaks to eat snacks at it.  We were out there for about an hour before she wanted to go in.  It was awesome!

After the guys got home, Dad and I went out on a date.  We watched "Saving Mr. Banks," which we both loved, and ate a late lunch together.  It was a very nice date.  Emerson, his brother, and Thomas played board games most of the day.  We also had lots of fun visiting with each other after we got home.

Saturday, Emerson, Riley, and Thomas played games again while Dad and we girls went to lunch and visited campus.  Lily had fun running around all over the place.  She also liked the driving video game at the bowling center.  We really enjoyed ourselves.  When we got home, I played outside with Lily again while Cassandra and Emerson finished packing.  After that, Riley left for home, Dad left for the gun show, and Emerson, Cassandra, and Lily left for home, too.  As they got ready to leave Lily yelled, "Good bye, good bye, see you soon!"  I wish we could see her soon.  It was very hard to see them go.  That night, Dad didn't feel well, and he still feels unwell today.  In fact, he stayed home from church. We got to talk to Cassandra a few hours ago.  They got home safe and sound, and Lily sang me a song on the phone.  She is very happy to be home.  I wanted to do something as a family tonight, so we are watching The Christmas Carol which is all Dad is up to right now.  We hope to have a New Years family home evening lesson tonight or tomorrow night.

I hope you liked hearing a bit about our week, Matt.  I hope that you will tell us a bit about yours, too.  I love you very much!

Love,
Mom

Nov 17--Dear Elder

Dear Elder,

Hi!  How are you?  Thanks for the letter you wrote us.  It was so wonderful to hear about all the people you are teaching.  The sister who has been getting people for you to teach is amazing!  You said last week was exciting, new, and sometimes disappointing.  In what way was it disappointing?  I'm sorry it is like that.  I'm sure it kind of comes with the territory, right?  I mean, you are a missionary for the Lord Jesus Christ, and He has filled you with His love, so it must be very disappointing and even heart breaking when someone you teach does not embrace the gospel.  This is how Christ, himself, feels, but I hope you feel the love of God and His approval of your work.

This has been a pretty good week for us.  Miriam is in Washington DC.  She said she enjoyed the marine ball, but they didn't take many pictures, which makes me really sad.  :(  I fasted two days for Miriam and it helped her be safe while she was there, and I hope that it also helped her to choose the right.  This morning she called us and told us she messed up on the return flight.  She thought her return flight ticket was for today, Sunday, but when she looked at the ticket today, she realized that she had accidently gotten one for yesterday, so she basically missed her flight since it was yesterday and not today, and had to buy another ticket.  May I just say that this trip has cost her lots of money!

Katrina has been performing in the play the last two days, and we are going to see her as a family tomorrow night.  Last night I went after the play and took pictures of her.  Elizabeth was there to see her perform, and also a friend from Layton.  It was so nice to be there!  I can't wait to see it tomorrow night.

Thomas has decided to sign up for city basketball, so with that, wrestling, and gymnastics, he's a pretty busy guy.  He got to hang out with friends yesterday, which is not something he has been able to do much lately.  They like to walk, and they walked to Jim's to buy food, and then checked out the game store and the thrift store which are now across from Jim's.  It sounds pretty fun to me.

I got to talk to Cassandra for awhile yesterday.  They seem to be doing good.  They've been out of town on a business trip for Emerson, and she said they had a lot of fun.  We talked about what I should get Lily for Christmas, and I am going to buy her a stuffed Kanga with baby Roo in her pocket.  Lily loves Kanga and Roo.  Emerson posted the cutest video of Lily jabbering on the cell phone non-stop for quite awhile.  It was pretty cute!  I wish they could be her for Thanksgiving.  It's good that Sarah and her family live close enough to visit so that they will have family to be with on that day.

Dad, Katrina, and I met in Provo for lunch yesterday, and then we went to Sam's club to see all the Christmas stuff and eat frees samples.  We would have gone and done that at Costco, but Katrina and I already did that before we met Dad for lunch.  Also on the way to meet Dad, we stopped at Jon's apartment for a minute.  It was nice to see him, and his apartment was nice and clean and smelled like cinnamon and other spices.  It was nice to spend some time with Katrina and then with Katrina and Dad both.

Friday, Dad and I went to a play at the university which we rarely do because we've been to some real stinkers there, and, yep, it was a stinka, but don't take our word for it because it won 2 Tony awards.  The acting, singing, and scenery were great--we just didn't like the play.  The story was dumb and the music was dull and repetitive.  Still, it was very nice to be out with Dad, and he bought me a pilgrim figurine at the  bookstore that I really like. Its a pilgrim couple, and they don't have any weird pictures on their skirts, and they don't have big feet or ugly faces, and they are not holding strange objects, just fruits and vegetables.  Their faces are beautiful and their clothes are authentic.

Dad is doing pretty good.  Work is stressing him out, as always, but he is really trying to trust Heavenly Father and have faith, not fear.  He has worked very hard to be home for family dinner time this week which is wonderful.  In fact, the Food Nanny came and talked to our stake about having family dinnertime and eating nutritious meals.  I feel pretty good about how we are doing at all that except I think we could linger a bit longer around the dinner table.  So this morning when we ate breakfast together, Dad and I had the kids stay at the table longer.  It was really nice.

I have been doing pretty good, Matt.  I could use a bit more sleep, a bit fewer calories, and a bit more consecration, but I am working on all that, ha ha.  I really want to be more of a disciple of Jesus Christ, but most of the time I fall pretty darn short. I am still trying, though.  This week I have gone to meetings, brought in food, and run errands.  Nothing real spectacular.  I am hoping that the coming week will be less busy and that I can do more good in the world.  I did try harder this week to reach out more to people, those I know and those I don't.  I can do better, though.  I am working on having the love of Christ always in my heart instead of the love of worldly things and idleness.  It is hard not to be idle when I am so often tired.  Tiredness also makes me want to eat too much food :)

I looked up La Cruz, Elota, Sinaloa on the map.  I couldn't zoom in much, though.  I guess the google truck doesn't drive there, ha ha.  I'm also not sure where Cuenta is, still, It was nice to get a bit of a look at where you are.  Say "hi" to your companion for us, and have a wonderful week.  I love you so much, Matt.  You are doing such wonderful work for the Lord!

Love,
Mom

PS  Matt, PS, I was talking with Jared's mom after sacrament meeting, and she shared an excerpt of one of his letters with me.  In it he mentioned a letter I sent to him (it was the Relief Society's turn to write letters to the missionaries, so I wrote to him and all the others out on missions in the ward).  I actually still have the letter I sent, and this is the part Jared referred to in his letter,

"A couple of weeks ago, I spoke in church about Matt's missionary work, and centered my talk on members being missionaries. I did this because in Matt's area (Culiacan Mexico), they are only allowed to teach people referred to them by the members.  This, as you can imagine, really helps the newly baptized members have the support they need to stay true to the gospel their whole lives."

Jared said in his letter to his mom that this idea inspired him and they began including the members in finding and teaching investigators.  He said it is really helping the work.  So there you go Matt, you are even blessing the lives of people in Nicaragua!

Dear Elder--Oct 6

Dear Elder,

Hi!  How are you? I sure hope you are feeling better than you did last week!  I am so sorry that you have been feeling sick, and we are so happy that Heavenly Father helped you to know to eat something so that you could feel better that night.  After reading your account, we decided that your parasite must have needed a midnight snack, ha ha.  Actually, having a parasite is no laughing matter, and we sure hope that medicine does the trick, but I have my doubts, so make sure you get more help if the problem persists, okay?  We are praying for you to be healthy, Matt, so that you can do the work of the Lord!

We watched the Saturday sessions last night, and I am so excited to be watching again soon, today.  Grandpa and Grandma are in town and they will be watching the morning session with us.  As a family, we will listen to the afternoon session of General Conference on the car radio as we drive to my brother Rick and his wife, Kelly’s house for a get-together.  Their son, Ben, is going to read his mission call, and we are going to celebrate Grandpa’s seventieth birthday.  Can you believe that he is seventy years old today?  I told him that seventy is the new sixty, ha ha.

Did you get to watch Conference?  Wasn’t it wonderful?  I have to admit, Matt, that I was a bit concerned going into conference that I would be overwhelmed with more things I need to incorporate into my life because I am still trying to incorporate my goals from the last general conference into my life.  Instead, conference strengthened me and reaffirmed the importance of my goals and gave me insights on how to go about meeting them.  As I listened, one of the impressions I got was to buy the book that my sister, Elizabeth recommended to me called “Every Day Missionaries.”   I bought both the Kindle version and the hard copy version which should be here by Monday or Tuesday.  Anyway, I have begun reading the Kindle version, and I really love it.  I am learning how we as members can be missionaries every day of our lives.

The reason that Grandpa and Grandma are here is because my sister Sarah’s husband, James’s mother passed away this last week.  Do you remember her, Matt?  What a sweet lady!  She has been suffering from cancer, Matt, and has been sick for quite awhile.  James was able to be in town when she passed away which is a real blessing.  She died Wednesday, I think, and Sarah and the kids flew in Thursday for Friday’s funeral.  Grandpa and Grandma were going to come up for my brother, Rick’s son, Jesse’s baptism next week, so they came up early to attend the funeral as well.  I missed the funeral because of work, but Elizabeth also attended.  Grandma says the funeral was a very sweet experience.  I wish I could have been with them, and I am so happy that we get to see Sarah and James and their family at Rick and Kelly’s today.

Yesterday was a wonderful day, first, because of Conference, and also because Grandpa and Grandma and Elizabeth and her kids all came over for a visit.  We didn’t know whether or not we’d see them yesterday, but Julie’s son Richard called them and told them that he’d be opening his mission call at 5:00 pm and that they could watch him do it on Facebook.  When they tried to set it up at Elizabeth’s house, it didn’t work so Grandpa and Grandma came over here.  It was total chaos as we talked to Rick, Sarah, and Elizabeth on the phone while Richard’s family was on video.  The video ended up failing, and we heard the mission call over the phone after all.  Richard has been called to serve in the Rapid City South Dakota mission.  Richard was really excited because ever since Jacob got his call to Singapore, Richard has joked that he would be going to South Dakota.  He even told his stake president he would be going to South Dakota.  He was joking, but when the call came, it was official.  It is wonderful the ways Heavenly Father lets us know that He is in the details of our lives.  After Dad and Thomas and Grandpa left for the priesthood session, Elizabeth and her younger kids came over to join us and Grandma for a little party.  We ate pizza and talked.  It was so fun!

Well, Matt, we just finished watching the Sunday morning session of Conference.  Grandpa and Grandma joined us for conference because Elizabeth and her family had another family over to watch this session of conference with them.  I have to ask Elizabeth about the family they invited over.  I suspect it came about because Elizabeth had read the book she recommended to me.  She is pretty excited about it.

It was nice to have Grandpa and Grandma over, and we really enjoyed this session of conference.  Now we are writing letters to you and eating and getting ready to drive to Rick’s during the afternoon session.  It makes me so happy that you are watching Conference, too.

Katrina missed conference yesterday because she was at the Shakespeare festival.  She had an enjoyable time, and got home while the guys were at the priesthood session.  Last year, she missed Saturday, too, but watched them between the Sunday sessions.  This year, because family has visited, and we have Grandpa’s birthday to go to, I don’t think she will be able to do that, but I have confidence that she will find a time to view it.

Dad has worked every spare moment installing the furnace at the laundry.  He took time off to watch both conference sessions on Saturday because I begged him, too, and of course he’s not working today on the Sabbath, I’ve been praying that it will be a good day of rest for him.  He is really getting burned out.  He says he never wants to accept a job just for the money again.  I hope not.  Its not worth it.  If he hadn’t said he would do the furnace, Vic would have just hired someone else, but Dad saw dollar signs, poor guy. He also has been working very hard teaching.  I think that things are beginning to get better, though.  I am so glad for that answer to prayer!

Since Dad was working so much, I went to Thomas’s football game on Thursday in his place.  Because he misses football for gymnastics every week, Thomas is not allowed to play in the games even though he makes up the absences by doing twice as many monsters as required. Well, Thursday night, one of the coaches obviously didn’t get the memo that Thomas isn’t to play in the games, and he played Thomas!  It was so wonderful to watch him out there giving his all to the team, and I was very happy for him.

Besides working, Miriam has been going shopping and also a co-worker couple invited her over to their house for dinner.  She and Preston have cooled it off for awhile, maybe permanently—we will see.  I know it is hard for her because she has spent so much time for him, the rest of her social life has suffered.  I know she’ll make it through.

I also got to talk to Cassandra and Lily this week and Skype with them.  When I called, Lily was in bed after her nap and didn’t want to get out of bed.  Cassandra was trying to convince her to get out.  Finally, it was Lily’s desire to “show” me her toys (we were only on the phone at the time, not Skyping) that got her out of bed.  She is so cute!  She sang songs to me including “Hip, Hipooray for the Piglet and the Pooh” and “Let’s Go Fly a Kite.”  She put her owl pajamas on over her clothes to show me how they looked.  I am so glad she likes talking to me on the phone.  Cassandra is very patient to hold the phone for me to talk to Lily and to talk to me, too.

I got to visit with Jon on the phone for a couple of hours this week, too.  He is doing well.  He also helped Dad with the furnace for a few hours which I know Dad really appreciated.  He is lookin so good!  He has an awesome goatee and ‘stache.  When I went to Costco on Saturday to buy pistachios for Conference, he was there, which I always love.  He was wearing some very cool shoes which turned out to be slippers he’d bought there at Costco, so I bought some for Thomas for Christmas. Shh…, don’t tell

And what have I been up to?  Hmm…well, have I mentioned that I love my job?  I love my job!!!  I had such a rewarding week teaching and tracking amazing students.  Besides that, I’ve been home being a mom.  Did I mention that I love being a mom?  I LOVE being a mom!!!  And that includes being a grandma.  I’ve Skyped with Lily, driven with Katrina, eaten dinner with Thomas and Miriam, and done various and sundry mom things that make life worthwhile. I also love being Dad’s wife!  Dad was going to work all Friday, but he was so burned out, he decided to only work till 5 and then go out on a date with me.  We had such a wonderful time!  We drove to the ski resort and ate at an incredibly delicious barbeque place that Dad discovered the last time he was there.  We also walked up and down main street and it was really fun and really cold.  We had lots of fun talking on the drive up and back, too.  When we got home, we ate ice cream (surprise, surprise) and watched TV.   Life is beautiful, Matt.

That is our week and our life.  How was your week and how is your life?  Please tell us everything.  Have you found Christina?  What about Jesus?  Is Erik totally out of the picture?  I really really hope you have been feeling well.  If you haven’t, don’t just suffer, GET HELP!!!  I love you, Matt.

Love,
Mom

Sept 15--Dear Elder

Hi, Matt.  How are you?  I'm sorry in advance for writing such a short letter.  I'm not totally sure it will be short, but I figure that is will since I haven't written a thing about this week until now, and I know how hard it is to remember back to what happened.  I am writing this on the computer at one of the Sandiego Hampton Inns.  We are here because we drove Miriam to see Preston before he leaves to his assignment in Washington DC.  He graduates from training next week, but won't necessarily have any leave, so Miriam wanted to visit him this week instead.

Let's see if I can remember anything about this week.  Monday, I helped out with the carnival at the high school for awhile, but only till about 6:00 because of family home evening.  When everyone got home, we had roasted red pepper sauce and noodles for dinner.  That night Dad had to replace the rotors and the brake pads on the van, so we did that for family home evening.  We all sat out with him, and Katrina learned how to take off a tire and put it back on which is something she had to do for driver's ed.  Afterward we went to Auto Zone and showed them our old brake pads, and they gave us our money back on the new ones we'd purchased because they were under warranty.  Then we read scriptures on the way home.  Miriam wasn't with us because she had class, so it was just me, Dad, Katrina and Thomas.

On Tuesday, after work, Dad and I went to the temple which was a wonderful experience.  Late that night, Thomas was sick, and so he ended up staying home from school Wednesday and Thursday.  He also missed the football team dinner Wednesday night which was sad since I took a crock pot of roast beef stew for the dinner.  I had asked him days earlier what kind of soup the boys would want, and he basically said soup with lots of meat, so I made it and then the poor guy wasn't there to eat it.

Dad went on lots of home visits with another teacher this week, and actually seemed to enjoy it.  He and that teacher are becoming good friends; he's the guy who got Dad to buy a metal detector and they like to talk about metal detecting and arrowhead hunting.

Its been raining a lot here and in other states, and in Colorado they had to call out the National Guard because of the flooding.  Many people had to evacuate.  I heard that Mexico has had tons of rain, too.  Are you okay?  They mentioned the places hardest hit and didn't mention your area, so I am hoping that all is well.  I noticed that in your letter you didn't talk much about the work.  Are things going okay?  I'm sorry if they are going slow, and hope and have been praying that they will pick up for you.

Thursday after work I visited a lady who lives in the new assisted living home that they built recently close to our house.  She is about my age.  When she was 20, she got in a terrible car accident, and still suffers from the affects of it.  She has three kids which is a miracle.  I met her Sunday when I taught the lesson there, and it was nice to get to know her better.  Her story is amazing, and she's a real sweetheart.

Our trip to San Diego started Friday after school.  We made good time, but still didn't get here till 1:30 in the morning our time which was 12:30 San Diego time.  Dad actually let me drive at the end and actually got a little sleep.  The next morning we drove to Camp Pendleton and picked up Preston.  It was wonderful to see him again; he is looking great.  We went to the San Diego Zoo, Old Town San Diego, and Seaport. Sometimes we were all together, and sometimes we split up.  It was fun to be on a little date with Dad.  Today we got to see Preston for just awhile.  We helped him get a haircut and walked around the commissary for awhile.  After we said goodbye to him, we went to church and then to lunch.  Now we are writing you!  Tomorrow we will drive home which means Dad and I will both miss work tomorrow.  We have to get back for Miriam's 6:00 class.

The kids seem to be doing well.  Thomas has been talking to merit badge counselors in an effort to get closer to his eagle, and Katrina has a concert tonight.  Elizabeth is going to drive her and Thomas there and also watch it.  It is very sweet of her to do that!  Yesterday they were very bored all day, but they survived.  Today they walked to stake conference together and seemed glad to have been able to get out of the house.

Well, that's about it, Matt.  Sorry it's so short.  Dad wants to leave now, so I have to stop.  I love you so much!  Please remember to serve other people!

Love,
Mom

Sept 8--Dear Elder

Dear Matt,

Thanks so much for your letter.  I am so glad that you are not sick anymore, and I hope that you will stay well and also safe.  We have been praying for that and for the members to help you find people to teach.  Have you found anyone?  I hope so.  Wow, Matt.  You know that when you almost miss the hot Mexican weather, you have been in Mexico too long, ha ha.   I am glad that you no longer take air pressure and drainage for granted.  Maybe you will become an engineer some day, ha ha.

Today is Sunday and may I say, what a week.  Monday was Labor day, and Thomas had to labor, ha ha.  He is now done with the water park for the year.  Dad went to work at Wash Hut, and Miriam, Katrina, and I went out to do a little shopping.  We didn’t buy anything, and our trip was uneventful.  Later on, when we had all gotten back from our various pursuits, we did something together as a family, but I cannot remember what it was.  I hope it was fun, ha ha!

Tuesday I worked on doing a monthly inventory of what food and household items we needed.  After dinner on Tuesday, Thomas had Young Men.  They were meeting at the church to go rapelling, so Dad and I drove him to the church.  I have no idea why we didn’t have him walk (probably because he was a bit late), but I wish we had, because after we dropped him off and said “hi” to the leaders and everything, I went to back out of the parking space, and we heard a loud “wham!” hit the side of the van, and then Thomas and the other boys were yelling “get off, gett off!”  I figured I’d run over someone’s foot, which I had, so  I drove forward a bit, we stopped the car and got out.  Daniel was laying on the ground, moaning.  He had been walking backward and had hit into the side of the van.  I’m still not sure how his foot got under the wheel, he must have turned around before I ran over it.  Anyway, Daniel’s dad is one of the leaders, so he was there, and between our dad and Daniel’s dad and the other leader, they tested the foot and decided it probably wasn’t broken.  It was hard to see Daniel in pain like that.  He was pretty brave, though.  They had Daniel walk around a bit, and then his Dad took him home.

I called their house a little later, and the first time, no one was home.   Daniel’s mom is a nurse and I was afraid that she’d found out that it may be broken after all and had taken him to the emergency room.  I called again, later, and the phone was busy.  When I went to call the third time, I was interrupted by a knock at the door, and there was Daniel’s mom and sister, whom I visiting teach, with beautiful roses in a vase for me.  Can you believe how compassionate, Matt?  They stopped to think about how I may have felt after running Daniel’s foot over and had come to comfort me.  They smiled and hugged and reassured.  Matt, I don’t know if I've ever felt so blessed in my whole life.  Their love and example mean the world to me.  I want to be like them.   I am still so touched that they would think to do that.  It is what the Savior would have done, I know it.

The next day, when Thomas and I went to check on Daniel and bring him a couple of candy bars, he came to the door using a cane, and with a smile.  Daniel worships the ground Thomas walks on and was thrilled to get a visit from him.  He told us that he’d gone to school (without the cane), survived just fine, and even walked home.  He was barefoot, and I could see no bruising or swelling.  Matt, if you had asked me about Daniel's before this all happened, I’d tell you the same thing I tell you now, they are some of the sweetest, most humble and kind people I know, and this experience has just served to drive home the point.  I am humbled to know people like them, and I am so glad that their boy was not hurt any worse.  I know Heavenly Father was blessing them, and I feel very unworthy to have been blessed so much, myself.

Wednesday was Katrina’s birthday, and she was pretty excited because she’d bought a comforter with her birthday money sometime last month and wasn’t allowed to use it on her bed until today.  She was so excited to try it in her new bedroom with her new chair.  It looks beautiful, by the way.  On Sunday Thomas and Miriam had given her a throw pillow for her new bed, and that looks awesome, too.   I delivered cupcakes to her before lunch so that she could share them with her friends, but I didn’t need to since one of her friends had baked some for her.  Still, in a lunchroom full of kids, you can never have too many cupcakes, right?  She also got birthday cards from Cassandra and Grandma, so in all, I think it was a good birthday for her.

On Wednesday morning I had a job interview.  I, once again, realized something that I could do better in an interview and that was to find out as much as I could about the job and tailor my interview to the needs of that job.  Matt, you may say, “Duh, everyone knows that,” and I guess I did, too, but knowing and doing are two different things since I am never quite sure how to get more info on a job.

But this time, Dad was familiar with the job and is good friends with the teacher I would be working under, so I called him and asked him to tell me everything he could about the job.  Dad was really excited about this job and told me I would love working there.  Instead of telling me much about the job, Dad gave me the phone number of an associate who’d worked in the same program for years, and that good man told me a ton about the nature of the job.

In the interview I concentrated the skills and understanding I possess that would make me good for the job.  When I finished interviewing, I still thought of things I could have said better, but I felt better about how I’d done than ever before.

Wednesday afternoon, I got a call from the district head of the special ed. Department telling me that I didn’t get the district job I applied for last week.  He said, however, that he had recommended me for the job I’d just interviewed for that morning.  That meant so much to me!  I had interviewed and interviewed, and interviewed, and until then had no idea how I was doing, and I appreciated getting that feedback, although I knew that a recommendation did not mean a job.

Thursday morning I got the job!  I asked them when they wanted me to start, and they basically wanted me immediately.  After I got off the phone, I dropped to my knees, scared to death.  After praying, I showered, dressed, went down to the district office to fill out papers, drove to the high school, got there at 10:00, and began my day. It’s such a nice high school, Matt.  You should see the kids in the halls, no PDA or bullying, respectful attitudes towards adults, and an unbelievable amount of kindness to the students I work with.  I think all high schools around here are like that, although I’m sure that they also have problems, some of which I’m sure to discover as time goes by.

So, what is this job that I’ve been hired to do?  It is five days a week, from 8 till 1:45.  I am working as a technician in a class for moderately physically and mentally challenged students.  Our goal is to teach them reading, math, social skills, and basically help them have a happy and positive high school experience.  We also take them out in the community to teach them life skills.  They are such sweet students, although sometimes they struggle.  As a tech I help teach them, take them to lunch, drive them to places, and support the teacher.  I liked the teacher when I interviewed, and now I like her even more.  I also like the other aids that work there.  Mainstream-peer tutor students come in to help the kids, and are an amazing group.  I have thoroughly enjoyed my first two days at this job.

Matt, I feel very blessed to get such a job.  I feel like Heavenly Father’s hand was in it as I blundered and learned through all those interviews.  Another thing that makes me know His hand was in it was that I apparently applied for a different job at the high school than the one I got—a very demanding job and Dad knows a lady who’s been transferred there who cries every night because it is so physically and emotionally demanding and exhausting.  I knew all about the job from Dad and thought I had steered clear of it and applied for this one, but I did just the opposite.  Luckily the man from the district office recommended me for the one I got, so they pulled my application and interviewed me for it.  I hope that all made sense, Matt.  The gist is that I know Heavenly Father answered my prayers.  I also know that no job is perfect, ha ha.  I hope I can do a good job for them.

Thursday night, Dad went to Thomas’s game.  They were ahead at the end and let Thomas play.  He made a tackle and we are so happy about that.  The girls and I bought baby outfits for Preston’s new little sister and delivered them.  We had lots of fun being together.

Friday after work I put away some of the monthly shopping that had been left out when I had to go to work on Friday and I slept.  That evening Dad and Thomas went out on an outing, Miriam went to a college dance with her friend and coworker, Brooke, and Katrina went to the laundry to wash some clothes.  After we got the laundry in the washers, we went out to eat for supper, and afterward we dried and folded.  On the way home, we bought ice cream which Dad and I shared when he and Thomas got home around 9:00.  Miriam seems to have had a fun night with her friend, so I think everyone was happy.

Saturday, Dad and Thomas went on another outing out in the boonies and I did lots of house cleaning.  When I Dad and Thomas got back, Thomas went to a birthday party and the rest of us went to a movie.  It was Despicable Me 2, and I thought it was sweet and funny.

Katrina started throwing up around bed time and kept throwing up through the night.  Dad gave her a blessing around 1:30, and later around 3:00, I thought to do a search on the internet to see how to stop dry heaving (throwing up when there’s no food in your stomach), and I found out that Dramamine, a motion sickness medicine, inhibits the vomiting reflex.  I can’t remember anyone in the family ever taking Dramamine, but I said a prayer that we had some, went to the bathroom cupboard and dumped out the medicine container.  Close to the bottom, there it was.  I crushed it between two spoons and had Katrina lick a finger, pick up some powder and eat it over and over slowly till it was gone.  She was fine the rest of the night and hasn’t thrown up since.   I know it was a result of the blessing Dad gave her and prayer.

This morning I was supposed to go to the assisted living home and give a lesson, but I began to feel sick while writing this letter.  I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to give the lesson, so I said a lot of prayers and sucked on lots of Pepto Bismol.  I was able to give the lesson just fine, with lots of silent prayers,  but after that, I was pretty much toast and wasn’t able to go to church.  Katrina and I laid here and watched Peter Pan, etc.  Now we are watching Little Women.  Katrina started feeling better and I was able to sleep off and on between stomach pain.  I never threw up and now feel much better which is how I can write this letter.  I feel guilty for staying home from church, ha ha, but not really because I felt awful.  I have every hope that I will be able to work tomorrow.  Katrina, however, seems flushed and bleary-eyed like she has a fever and she gets hot and cold and has a headache.  Weirdly, she’s not hot to the touch--maybe because she has wet hair from a bath.  I’m pretty sure she has a fever.  I hope she can go to school tomorrow, and so does she.

Tonight I think we are going to watch a CES fireside talk given by Elder Nelson, and I look forward to that.  In the meantime, Dad and Thomas are going to home teach the Jewels.   Wow, I’m not as “better” as I thought.  I probably should ask Dad for a blessing when he gets home.
Well, Matt, this was our week.  I want to get today because who knows how the morning will go.  Thank you for being an obedient missionary and for seeking the spirit.  I know that Heavenly Father is blessing you.  Please don’t get discouraged, Matt.  You are exactly where you are supposed to be and are doing exactly what you are supposed to be doing.  I love you with all my heart.

Love,
Mom

Aug 4--Dear Elder

Dear Elder,

It is Monday, and I am preparing to send this letter off to you.  I plan to tack this part, where I answer your last email, on to the beginning of the letter.  Thanks for your email, even though it was very short, ha ha.  I think that when I happen to be on the email the same time as you, and we “chat,” we don’t really say much, and it takes you away from reading and writing emails, so I probably won’t do that much anymore if that’s okay.

So, Matt, I have an assignment for you this week, and it’s based on something Dad has taught me through the years, when I’ve been discouraged by my faults.  Look at the good things you’ve done.  In the email you write me, I want to hear all about your successes, not just the big things, but the small and simple ones that seem like nothing.  Take some time to remember the good stuff, and then do that daily.  Every night, as you report to the Lord, tell him all of the good things you have done to serve Him.  That is not pride, it is the righteous reporting of a valiant servant.  Remember to thank Him for his grace that made it possible for you to do good things.  When you fail to acknowledge the good you’ve done, you automatically fail to acknowledge the Lord’s hand in it, but when you report and show gratitude for the good you are able to accomplish, you strengthen your relationship with Him, and all things become possible!   Righteous reporting of the faithful things you’ve done is just as important as the righteous repenting of the mistakes you made.  It is all righteousness!  Whew.  Sorry for the sermon, ha ha.

Anyway, Dad’s birthday was really fun.  The only thing that could have made it better is if Jon could have come, but somehow he didn’t get our message about the party, and when we texted him to see if he was coming, it was too late, he already had other plans.  Dad’s party centered on food, of course.  The barbecue roast we made was good.  We also had corn, watermelon, and salad with garden tomatoes.  He really liked the cake I made him sweetened with Erythritol.  I used coconut flour and almond flour instead of wheat flour to cut down on carbs.  Dad is a cake lover, so it was a real treat for him.  Besides eating, we talked and visited a lot.

Everyone gave him a heart-felt letter, which is his favorite birthday gift, and is good for you, Matt, since that’s something you can give him even being in Mexico.  He is using his birthday money to buy a gift that he says is a surprise and that we are going to pick up today.  Since it he called it a surprise, and since I know Dad, I figured that it was more a gift for me than for him.  Also in, typical Dad fashion, he was so excited about the gift, he couldn’t stop talking about it and giving hints until, in typical Mom fashion I guessed it after 2 hints.  Anyway, “his” present is to get the diamond we bought while we were on our cruise set into my wedding ring.  He’s really excited about it, and so am I.  Just think, by tonight I will have a real diamond in my wedding ring again! Yay!  Your dad really is the sweetest guy around, and just happens to be the love of my life. BTW, Little does he know, he has more presents coming on his actual birthday, ha ha.

Well, after we ate, we went around and told Dad what we would give him if we had all the resources in the world.  Most of it centered around Disney domination and incredible wealth.  I also tacked on that I would give him a professorship in history at the University.  After that, he asked about Madlibs, and then realized that we sort have neglected birthday Madlibs this year, commenting that we are Madlib libbers, or Madlib liberated, ha ha. Anyway, after that, Don, Renee, and Becky came over for a visit.  It was nice to see and visit with them.  So, the highlight of all parts of the evening was talking.

Now for the part of the letter I wrote Sunday morning.  I am putting it all together backwards this time, I guess.

Matt, today is Sunday.  First, I want to tell you some amazing news about Preston.  As I told you before, he is in the Marines.  He finished initial training in July and is now in school of infantry training and will graduate in September.  Anyway, Preston texted Miriam Saturday morning to tell her that he is one of 25 marines to be assigned to the Washington DC barracks of the 8th and I.  Even though we had little idea of what it meant, we were so excited when she told us!  We knew that whatever else it meant, it was a great honor.

Since then, I looked it up, and here’s what Wikipedia says about the 8th and I:
Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. is located at the corner 8th and I Streets, Southeast in Washington, D.C. Established in 1801, it is a National Historic Landmark, the oldest post in the United States Marine Corps, the official residence of the Commandant of the Marine Corps since 1806, and main ceremonial grounds of the Corps.

Isn’t it wonderful?  He will report there after he graduates in September. I’m so excited that he was chosen for such an honor, Matt.  He is certainly worthy in every way to be part of this elite group.  Being a Marine has been his dream since he learned as a boy that his great grandpa was a Marine who fought and died on Iwo Jima.  He is a moral, upstanding young man as you know.  He is also tall and thin, and the article said there are strict height, weight, and background requirements.

Okay, so Preston just called Miriam and I got her to ask him some specific questions.  He says he will be marching in the weekly parades at Arlington National Cemetery and also at the Iwo Jima monument.  He said that he’s not sure why he was chosen except that he’s over six feet, not fat (as he put it), and that they said something about confidence and maturity.  This will be an amazing way to honor his great grandpa’s memory, and the perfect place for Preston to fulfill his four years of duty in the Marine Corps.

Well, any other news pales in comparison, but here’s what else has been happening.  Friday I did some of my monthly shopping.  Poor Dad spent the day resurfacing the drive way at the laundry, and he was pretty exhausted by the time I met him for our date, so we just ate and then went home again.  Yesterday we got to spend some time together purchasing and loading sheet rock.  We also ate lunch together.

Last night we had a neighborhood barbecue at the Peerys.  It was a redneck theme, and Miriam bought herself overalls, a flannel shirt, and redneck boots.  Katrina and I wore plaid shirts.  It was fun to visit with the neighbors.  I’m very glad we went.
Today we will be having a family birthday party for Dad.  I bought stuff to make him a low-carb birthday cake, and I sure hope it turns out.  He asked for barbecue roast for dinner, so that is what we are having.  I hope Jon can come over to celebrate with us!
It’s been kind of a hard week, like wading through quicksand, but it has been good, too.  I hope your week has been good, Matt.

Hi!  Today is Friday.  I want to write to you before I forget what happened this week, ha ha.  It has been a hard week for us because it seems like the good things we have tried to do didn’t really happen, but we’re still trying.

Monday night we wanted to have family home evening, but a guy came over to give us and estimate on hanging and taping the drywall in our basement instead.  He used to be in our ward, and his wife came over, too.  It was nice to visit with them, but we missed family home evening.

I have spent lots of time this week doing inventory.  I take a monthly inventory of what food and household items we have and what we need and then I do a big monthly shopping to replenish.  I try to keep a three month supply of everything so that we can be prepared.  The inventory takes kind of a long time, but it is done now and I am going shopping today if everything goes as planned.

I have also been working on getting family pictures ready to hang up on the wall.  First, I had trouble getting enough of the picture frames I wanted, but now I have plenty.  Also I had to fix some of the pictures.  I have a picture of Cassandra and Lily and one of Emerson and Liliy, so I had to “photoshop” them to make a picture of all three together.  At first I asked someone else to do it, but it didn’t turn out so well, so I did it myself, and it looks pretty good.  Also, I have two versions of our last family portrait and there are aspects of both that I don’t like, so I took the best from both and made new one.  Anyway, I am almost ready to hang the pictures.  Yay!

Tuesday Dad and I wanted to go to the temple, but I had a doctor’s appointment and it went long, plus Jeff came over from across the street.  He’s helping Dad with the wiring for the basement.  Wednesday we had a stake young men/young women activity at the park where we played capture the flag.  It was a beautiful day, and the activity turned out very good.  It was so well attended that we sent Miriam to the store for us to buy five more donuts.  There were about 230 people including youth and leaders.  I enjoyed talking to the leaders and some of the youth in our ward.

Katrina is pretty sick.  It started out with a cough in the night, but has evolved into a full-fledged cold complete with low-grade fever.  She slept down on the couch last nigh with her kindle to keep her company if she couldn’t sleep.  I think she slept really well, though, so that’s a good thing.  Thomas has been trying to work every day this week.  He also has been working on merit badges because he wants to get his eagle scout by the time he’s 16.  Thursday, he got to swim at Seven Peaks with his friends before work, and he really enjoyed that.  Miriam has been working a whole lot.

Thursday night, Dad and I were able to go to the temple, finally, and I am so glad we did that!  It was a wonderful experience and I enjoyed being with him.  He had to work at the laundry after that.  He’s resurfacing the parking lot and driveway.  It is a lot of work.  He’s going to be doing that again, today (Friday), but he says we can still go out on a date, so that will be nice.

Well, Matt, that's it.  Sorry it was all backwards, ha ha!  I love you very much and can't wait to read your next letter.  I can't believe its already 11:36.  I hope this gets emailed in time!

Love,
Mom

July 15--Dear Elder

Hi, Matt!  How are you?  Thanks for your letters.  I am trying to figure out what your companion said to me in Spanish, and from what I can make out, he said that you are a good companion and that you two are going to have success.  I can’t figure out what “no degale que” means.  Did you spell it right?
I really appreciate your words of gratitude and encouragement.  They mean so much to me!  Remember that in letters, people can be their best selves, but in real life, I’m just the goofy old mom I’ve always been, ha ha.

I really liked what you said about “anything that is righteous will be given to us if we ask for it in the name of Jesus.”  I think most of what I will write about this week demonstrates that to be true.
I also like what you said about a parent’s love.  “…I think the love parents have for their kids is the thing that will draw them back at the end, because when someone is faced with that sort of love, they, in turn, will do something for them selves, not to help themselves, rather because someone who really loves them, asks them to change.”  Thanks for that encouragement.  I totally agree.  Your Great Grandma Shumway had a saying, “Love them in to the family.”  She worked hard to do this especially with her sons and daughters in law.  It is a good example of what Heavenly Father wants us to do.

In a larger sense, your thoughts on a parent’s love also apply to our Heavenly Father’s love.  As our heavenly parent, Father in Heaven loves and blesses us so much and he is hoping we will love Him back and do everything in our power to return to him.  1 John 4:19 says, “We love him, because he first loved us.”  Also in the sacrament hymn, “O God The Eternal Father” is says Jesus ransomed himself in order “to win our souls with love.”  Charity never faileth!

I like that you said your week was fun.  It is good to see you finding joy in the work and that the Lord is guiding you and giving you success.  You said, “we really hardly do anything in this work other than live worthily; study; repent, a lot; and follow the impressions that come from the Lord.”  You are really getting the hang of missionary work, Matt, and I am so glad!

You also said, “It sounds so easy but, there is a constant enemy and we have so many imperfections that sometimes I just want to sit down and cry, but, I cant do that, so I just pray.”  You sound like Nephi in 2 Nephi 4!  His weaknesses made him sad, too, but he said, “Rejoice, O my heart, and cry unto the Lord, and say: O Lord, I will praise thee forever; yea, my soul will rejoice in thee, my God, and the rock of my salvation.”  I know what you mean about having so many imperfections you want to sit down and cry.  I especially hate it when I have been studying and learning about things that I need to do to improve, and then I go and make the same old mistakes again.  That can be so discouraging, but we won’t be discouraged if we’ll just remember that God is at the helm, and he is perfect and will help us prevail if trust him and pray like you said and never give up.

You were so right when you said, “I know that we can improve, we are a long ways away from were we need to be, but I feel.... Secure in the future. I know that I'm gonna fall, a lot, but I know that the Lord will never let me down.”  I feel that way, too, Matt.  I love how you refer us to scriptures!  It’s such a missionary thing to do and it means that you are really immersing yourself in living and preaching the word of God.

You said that anything that’s righteous will be given to us if we ask in the name of Jesus, and we have many prayers answered this past week.  For one thing, Thomas went to football camp, and as you probably know, kids can make lots of bad choices at football camp, but I prayed about it and felt like he should go.  I also fasted and prayed that Thomas would choose the right and that the experience would be a good one.  Heavenly Father comforted me while Thomas was gone, and Thomas has talked quite a bit about camp since he’s been home, and I think it went well and that he made good choices.
Another real answer to prayers came with the help Miriam got on her trip to San Diego.  She left with plans kind of up in the air.  I fasted and prayed for her and also went to the temple, and everything worked out good.  She was able to get safe transportation to and from the base to visit Preston and is currently on a plane to come back home.  We will be picking her up at the airport this evening.  I really feel like Heavenly Father was watching out for her and blessing her.  Also, I have been praying that Jon will be able to progress in his life, and, as you know, he found an apartment to move into.

A smaller blessing is that we will be moving up into the room that Jon is vacating so that we can finish remodeling the downstairs.  Dad moved everything to one side of our bedroom and started tearing down sheet rock on the other side, the day before Grandma had her stroke, and we have been living in one half of the room ever since.  It will be nice to move into a real bedroom while we finish the one downstairs.

With Miriam working and Thomas gone, Katrina and I have spent a lot of time together, and I’ve really enjoyed it.  I think she may be a bit tired of being dragged from store to store with me, though, ha ha.  I’m a bit tired of it myself!  We did get to visit my sister, Elizabeth, one day which we really enjoyed, and Katrina talked me into getting her a treat a couple of times, ha ha.  The week is pretty much a blur without much else really happening.  It rained a lot which is nice.

Poor little Lily has been sick ever since they got back home.  I hope she gets better soon.  Cassandra is taking her to the doctor tomorrow, and I hope they get things figured out.  We haven’t been able to Skype with them since they left which is hard, but we have talked on the phone a bit.

Now it is Monday.  Yesterday was a nice day.  Nick's mom talked about his mission in church, and some youth talked about choir tour.  It was nice to hear more about what Katrina experienced on tour since she’s not all that talkative, ha ha.  We had a lesson on fasting in Sunday school where we read Isaiah 58.  I love that scripture!  In Relief Society we sisters had a lesson entitled, “With God, All Things Are Possible.”  It was from the Teachings of the Prophets—Lorenzo Snow manual, and it was a really good lesson.  It encouraged us to trust in the Lord completely, serve Him fully, and He will lend us the grace we need to do all that is required of us.

The teacher, mentioned the idea that being loved is good, but love along with trust is better.  In other words, it is important to love God, but do we trust Him enough to put all we have and are into his hands knowing that He will sustain us?  Along those same lines, I was thinking that we know God loves us because He loves all His children, but does He trust us?  Can he trust us to do what he asks of us?  It reminds me that our prophet, President Monson said he hoped the Lord knew that if He needed an errand to be done, Tommy Monson would do it!  I want God to trust me like that.

Sorry this letter is so short, Matt, I don’t have much else to write.  I am so glad you are progressing in the work, and we are trying to reach out to others here at home.   We pray for you daily, and know that our prayers and being answered.  I love you!

Love,
Mom

June 23--Dear Elder: Home Again

Now its Sunday and we’re home!  It is so nice to be back.  Even Dad said we were away too long, ha ha.  We enjoyed visiting the Animal Kingdom, especially the safari, which we went on twice, and the Finding Nemo musical.  The next day we went to the Magic Kingdom and it was fun to see how the same rides differed from their California Disneyland counterparts.  It was much more spread out because Disney has more land in Florida.

We had a wonderful vacation, Matt.  Dad is so fun to be with, and he always took care of all the arrangements.  He planned and navigated, and scheduled, leaving me free to just enjoy.  He is such a selfless and amazing husband.  I loved spending two whole weeks of one-on-one time with him.  He’s fun and thoughtful and makes anything we do together a blast.

While we were away, Thomas and Jon did a lot of barbecuing.  In fact, they bought a new barbecue.  Thomas also worked a couple of times while we were gone, and he also, according to Grandpa, saved the house from serious smoke damage one day when they left and forgot to turn off the beans.  Thomas came home, smelled something over cooking, and turned off the stove.  If he hadn’t, Grandpa said that the pan would have smoldered dry on the stove for six hours.  We feel really blessed that that didn’t happen.

We feel really blessed about a lot of things, Matt.  The kids were safe and happy while we were gone, and made good choices.  These things are answers to prayers.  I am so grateful to Grandpa and Grandma for staying with them and helping them to have full, safe, and happy days.  They got to see Elizabeth’s family a lot, and Rick and Sarah’s family.  It couldn’t have been any better for them.  Dad and I were also blessed with good weather, safe travel, and wonderful experiences.  Grandpa and Grandma seem to have enjoyed their stay, and got home again safely.  So many answers to so many prayers.

Coming home, our flight was delayed an hour and a half, so we weren’t able to see Katrina before she left on choir tour, which is really sad.  She took a phone, though, and we were able to talk to her yesterday.  I got a text from her saying that she now has bad phone service, so I don’t know how much we will be able to talk to her.  I have been praying that she will be happy and make friends, and have a nice host family and be safe.  I hope we can talk to her soon.

How is Miriam?  She is sick today.  It looks like she has tonsillitis.  Her boss gave her and her coworker iPads for passing the test, and she is really excited about that.  The local paper did a front page story about Preston graduating from Marine training and it quotes Miriam.  Pretty cool, huh?

Last night, Dad and I did a barbeque in the back yard with Thomas, Miriam, and Jon.  I really loved it.  The weather was perfect, and we enjoyed visiting and eating together.  Have I mentioned yet how good it is to be home? ha ha.

Today we only have sacrament meeting, and then at 4:00 we are going to watch the MTC broadcast put out by the church.  I don’t know if it is nationwide or world wide, but I think it is world wide, so maybe you will see the same broadcast, too.  I really look forward to seeing it especially because I think it will be about missionary work.  You can see it online already, but I will wait and watch it today with the fam.

Emerson, Cassandra and Lily will be here next weekend for a visit.  Woo hoo, woo hoo!!  I can’t wait, but I have a lot to do till then.  Yesterday we were able to buy a pack and play from the want ads for $25.  It is almost brand new, and it will make a good place for Lily and future grandkids to sleep.  Hopefully we will be using it tons in the years to come.

After Cassandra and Emerson have been here for a few days, they are going to Seattle to see Emerson’s grandma, and they are leaving Lily here for us to tend.  Woo hoo, woo hoo!!  I want to buy a little wading pool for her.  Wouldn’t that be fun?

June 8--Letter From Brian to Matt

Dear Son,
I am also happy to hear about your successes and struggles and everyday life.  It is wonderful to be able to talk to people about the gospel.  There was a gentleman on the plane yesterday that had MS that I was sitting next to.  When we got our snacks I was so focused on seeing how many carbs were in the snack that I didn't realized he was asking me for help opening his packet of cookies.  I felt so bad.  Then later he asked me what time it was and I was able to talk to him.   We then had a nice conversation about things and he asked me to hold my arm across his chest when we were landing because he doesn't have any upper body strength and would go flying forward.  It was so nice to be able to help him.

Mom and I were able to talk to another man on our next flight and he had a lot of nice things to say about Mormons.  it was fun talking to him, mom does such a nice job starting conversations with people!

Right now I am sitting in a hotel room in Cocoa Beach, FL, I can see the ocean out of our Hotel Room.  We board the cruise ship in two hours!  Of course seeing the ocean is no big thing to you! since you have been living by it for almost a year now!

So this week we will be in the sam country!, Costa Maya and Cozumel, so if you have some time you can run over and see us! ha ha.  Thanks for the photos.  Hey, I think that Preston got ordained an Elder!  He graduated Marine Corps Basic training and is  now an official Marine. Also Miriam passed her test to be licensed to sell insurance.

I was so tired of working in the Jail, I didn't mind the students but I just hated being locked up!  I really did!  I mean, I cant get out of even the classroom unless someone else lets me out.  I just don't like it.
Well, I am sorry that the kids probably wont write you this week.

I sure love you and we will write you next week for sure!
Again, I love you and am so proud of you and all that you do.
Love,
Dad

June 8--Dear Elder

Dear Matt,

How are you?  Thanks for your letter.  Guess what?  I got a text at camp (which is a miracle of itself) from Miriam saying that Preston has been ordained an Elder!  I was so happy when I heard it, I cried.  It scared the other camp leaders because they thought something bad had happened, ha ha.  It was the best news I could have possibly received.  I am so proud of Preston!  Heavenly Father has really blessed us, Matt.  Preston graduated from training on Friday, and Miriam sent us a picture of him.  I can’t figure out how to send it to you, but I asked Miriam to do it.  I hope she does.

Hi, I bet you didn’t expect to hear from us today.  I didn’t know exactly how things would go for us, so I wasn’t sure if we would be able to write or not.  Anyway, we are in Cocoa Beach Florida and it is beautiful!  As soon as I got off the plane and walked into the airport, I could smell the difference in the air.  I think it was the ocean although we were an hour away from it.  Anyway, the drive from the airport to the beach was so beautiful and lush.  I slept for part of it, though.  We are staying on the beach and this morning we went out on the balcony to see the sunrise.  It was only 4:30 our time, so we went back to bed after that.

Our flight was just fine.  Dad and I weren’t able to sit by each other at first and that was not fun.  I was super tired and dozed off a lot, but couldn’t stay asleep because I was wedged between 2 people with nowhere to rest my head.  The second half, Dad sat by the window so he could rest his head on it and I slept on his shoulder.  I got some nice sleep.  I knew that we should talk to the guy next to us, but I didn’t want to.  Then I thought about how much Heavenly Father loves him and how much I have been blessed and realized how unthankful I would be to Heavenly Father if I didn’t do what He wants me to.  I turned to him and asked him if he lived in Orlando, and he started talking.  He was a real interesting guy who has done a kajillion things including some things where we live.  He said he loves Mormons and asked if we were Mormons.  We had a nice conversation with the man and he thanked us for starting the conversation.  Nothing beats the feeling that comes from pleasing the Lord!

It was sure nice to finally get to the hotel and eat dinner because we sort of skipped lunch, ha ha.  Dad ate a full rack of pork ribs at dinner.  He gave me one and they were so good, I couldn’t blame him.  I wanted more, but they were pork, so I just ate a little.

From Monday to Thursday morning I was at girl’s camp.  We leaders went up Monday afternoon, but the girls didn’t come up till Tuesday which means we had a nice relaxing time settling in and setting up.  It was really fun, and we talked and giggled at bedtime.  The next day it was work, work, work, but it was fun.  Some of the things I was responsible for was helping the youth camp leaders over the second year girls help their girls make journals, giving a devotional, helping the “drops of awesome” committee make a banner, doing an “mtc” class, taking the second years and their ycl’s on a hike, and doing another devotional.

The journal activity was insane, but we got through it, ha ha.  For my devotional, Sister Melton wanted me to talk about how life is a journey, and our destination is eternal life, so I wrote a song to the tune of Gilligan’s Island, and we in the Young Women’s presidency sang it with sailor hats on and then I quickly wrapped it up with my testimony.  I was surprised how many people came up to me and said they loved it.  The banner was so cute, the girls made it look like a pirate map with burned edges and Islands on the map to represent each day.  We got it up, but it was hard work to keep it up—it kept wanting to fall down.  The hike was beautiful and, by the time we’d stopped and pondered and written in our journals a couple of times the way the ycl’s planned, it ended up being pretty short.  It was a good experience, though.  For the MTC class I talked about the characteristics of Christ, basing the lesson on Elder Bednar’s talk, “Characteristics of Christ.”  I think it went well.

The last devotional I was supposed to do, had for the theme, “Rise to the Rock,” the rock being Jesus Christ, and Jon gave it for me.  He did a great job.  Lots of people came up to him afterwards to tell him how great he did.  It was awesome!  He also drove me home.  It was the perfect way to end a wonderful girl’s camp.

Dad was waiting when I got home—he was on lunch break.  All of the kids besides Jon were gone.  Katrina was still at camp, Miriam is at Preston’s graduation, and Thomas is on a camp out.  I hope they are all having a wonderful time.  It is a nice feeling to know they are all in good places.

I just talked to Jon on the phone and he said that Katrina got home at midnight and that she also threw up last night, so I guess she got home from camp early and sick.  I haven’t been able to get a hold of her yet to see how she’s doing.  I hope she’s okay, now. Cassandra’s family has also been feeling sick.  I got to talk to Lily yesterday and, happily, she sounded like she’s doing pretty good now.  She sang “Jesus Wants Me For a Sunbeam to us.  She is so cute!  She calls me “Grammy.”  Isn’t that sweet?

Thanks for your letter, Matt.  I am so grateful that you had such a wonderful district meeting.  I have been praying and fasting for you, and I am so glad that both your district leader and your zone leader were in tune with the Spirit and could help you feel hope.  Hope and joy are an important part of the gospel plan.  What good would the gospel be if it didn’t bring us joy?  I hope you will be less worried now and more happy.

I am glad that you worked to create your week spiritually before you lived it physically.  I am so glad it helped you. I think it is so important to renew my covenants and think of the atonement during the sacrament.  I use my morning prayers to ask Heavenly Father’s help in creating my day and week.  When I am able to focus on Christ during the Sacrament, it sets a pattern of focusing on Christ throughout the week, whereas if my mind wanders during the sacrament, I find myself straying more from Christ during the week.  This is the way that the sacrament spiritually creates the week for me.

I am glad also that you are feeling more courage to obey the Spirit.  I have been praying that you would.  I am glad you were able to comfort the woman with the baby.  I pray always that you will be able to bring the gospel to good people like her because that is where she and everyone will find true happiness.  One thing that helps me when I feel afraid to obey the spirit is to ask myself “What are you afraid of?”  When I directly face the fear, I usually realize that it is unfounded, and that the real tragedy would come if I ignored the prompting.  I love you, Matt.  You are an instrument in God’s hands.  He loves you.  Write down what you learned about hope so that you can refer to it when you need your hope renewed.  I love you so much!

Love,

Mom

June 1--Dear Elder

Dear Matt,

Thank you so much for your last letter.  I am so glad that Arturo got baptized!  Where did the flowers in the picture come from?  I liked hearing about how you listened and responded to Pablo with love and didn't tell him how he was wrong.  I am trying to work on my listening, too.  I am trying to look beyond what is being said and focus more on the meaning and feelings behind the words.  Your experience helps me see that I need to focus on who the speaker is as a child of God, and try to see them and love them the way Heavenly Father does.  Then I can interact with them the way he would like you did with Pablo.   Thank you for sending pictures.  It helps me imagine where you are a bit more.

Did you hear about that Mormon mom from Arizona who was put in a Mexican prison for drug possesion.  She was coming home from a relative's funeral in Los Mochis, and police made a raid on the bus.  They found 12 lbs of drugs stashed under her seat.  At first they were going to arrest her husband, but she begged to go along as an interpreter and they decided to release him and arrest her instead.  Our government put lots of pressure on the Mexican government to let her go, and at her trial, they showed a survelance tape that showed her and her husband boarding the buss carrying very little; there was no way they could have carried on the drugs.  Anyway, she is free now, thank goodness.

Well, today is Saturday and it is the first time I've written because the week is so busy.  I have been getting ready for girl's camp and for the cruise, and doing my monthly Costco, Walmart, and Macey's shopping so that the house will be well stocked when Grandpa and Grandma com to take care of the kids.  I have been working hard since Monday and still have laundry, packing, phone calls, and a ton of other things to do before I leave for camp on Monday.

At camp we are doing an MTC activity so that the girls can get a feel for what it is like to be a missionary in the missionary training center.  They will rotate through classes and each class will be about one of the chapters in Preach My Gospel.  I volunteered to do a class on chapter 6, the attributes of Christ.  Remember that talk by Elder Bednar called "The Character of Christ"?  I used it in planning my lesson.  I am excited to talk about Jesus Christ and share how he always put the needs of others above his own.

I have also been asked to do a devotional called "Rise to the Rock"  the rock being Jesus Christ, of course.  For that one, I decided to show the girls the big wall hanging that we had in the entry way before we painted the house.  In case you don't remember, it is of Jesus standing on rocks above a stream holding a little child in one arm and reaching down with the other to help a young girl climb up.  It is called "Be Not Afraid" and it is by Greg Olsen.  It definitely illustrates rising to the Rock of our Redeemer.  I thought of the idea in the middle of the night one night and had it all figured out what questions I would ask the young women in order to discuss the picture with them, but when I sat down later to organize my thoughts and write the questions, nothing would come.  I expressed my frustration out loud, and Jon, who was in the room, told me exactly what I could ask and say.  I was so impressed I told him he should come up and give the devotional and he said he would and now that's the plan.  He'll do a great job!

I am over many of the youth camp leaders, including Katrina, who are in turn over groups of younger girls.  We call the YCL's "Big Sisters" and they mentor their "little sisters."  They have planned activities for their little sisters to do, quotes for them to read, journals for them to write in, and time for them to study scriptures together.  It is amazing to watch these girls make plans and carry them out.  They are learning lots about love and leadership.

I'm writing to you about camp stuff because that's pretty much my life right now.  Let's see...what have I done besides camp?  Well, I got to Skype with Cassandra and Lily.  She is really growing up.  Cassandra wrote a few of the things Lily says in her blog.  Here are some of them:

"You dropped the oatmeal." She said this to me after she dropped some oatmeal.

"YOU dropped the spoon." She said this to me very sternly--you guessed it--after she had thrown her spoon on the floor.

"Sorry" after bumping into someone.

"You OK?" after someone gets hurt.

"Wanna bite?" She said this to a dog today, while holding out her hand...yikes!

"Bless you." after someone sneezes.

"Ready?"

"Oh, yeah!"

"That's a lot of poop." during a diaper change, of course.

"Dat's da rule." When she's in trouble and broke a rule.

"I eat the food."

"I was...snack." when asked what she did at nursery.

"Night, night...tight!" trying to say "sleep tight."

"Stay awake!!!" this when she's tired.

So cute!  She is really liking nap time these days because it is one of the few times in the day when she gets to have her binky, ha ha.

Thomas worked only once this week, the other two days he was scheduled to work got cancelled because of weather.  He and Katrian helped me out a ton yesterday as I did inventory and shopping for the month.  They helped unload the car, put stuff away, refill stuff, etc.  Even with all that, they managed to waste plenty of time as well, ha ha. Katrina will be singing with the children's choir this Sunday at a pre-tour fireside.  I know it will be wonderful!

Miriam is gearing up to go to San Diego with Preston's family to see him graduate from Marine boot camp or whatever they call it.  She is very excited, but first she has to take that test for work again Monday.  She has been taking an online class to study for it.   She found a "detox" online.  It is a 5 day eating regime that is supposed to detoxify your body whatever that means.  Anyway, it is a pretty good diet because it has lots of fruits and veggies, nuts and legumes, and she asked me to do it with her.  The deal is that I paid for the food we need and she prepares it.  Today is our last day, and it has been fun to do it with her.  I guess we will end our detox with a fast since tomorrow is fast Sunday.  I plan to squeeze in all three meals before 4:30 which shouldn't be hard to do because they are very low calorie and then start fasting.  Anyway, Miriam has been so busy that it is nice to do this with her, and I have been so busy, that I don't have much time to prepare my own meals anyway.

Dad has been so nice about everything!  Last night was supposed to be our date night, but he asked me if I needed to do camp stuff instead and asked what he could do to help.  We couldn't even go out to eat or have our Friday night treat because of the detox.  It was really hard for me to miss out on Tamale Thursday at Cafe Rio with Dad, ha ha.  By the way, he asked a hispanic lady and she said that there is a little tamale place locally that makes delicious tamales.  Can't wait to try it!  Well, I'd better get busy!  Actually, I think I'll go back to bed instead, ha ha!

May 22--Dear Elder: Answering Matt's Last Email

Hi, Matt.  Thank you so much for your last letter.  I loved it!  I am so sorry that Thomas and Miriam didn't write.  I was gone to meetings most of Sunday, and wasn't there to remind them.  I know it's sad that they have to be reminded, but if you remember how you were at that age, it will help you understand.  Thomas feels pretty bad about it.  After I read your letter to the fam, he went and wrote you a letter.  One, because I told him he should, but, two, because he wanted to.   Miriam is just plain overwhelmed with life.  I know they will do better.

How did Dad break his tooth?  Well...he made some hard tack, and I guess it was REALLY hard, ha ha.   He wanted something to have in his car to eat in case of emergency, and you know how he is about history, so that's why he made hard tack.  He threw the rest away, ha ha.  His tooth is fine now, btw.

Thanks for telling me about the times you felt joy.  I think that it is easier to feel that out in nature.  Of the four specific times that I remember feeling that rush of joy, three of them have been when I was out in nature.  I am going to girl's camp in a couple of weeks, and I look forward to being in nature.  The camp has a special spirit to it, and I feel very close to Heavenly Father there, and very aware of His love.

I'm glad you enjoyed Great Grandma's email.  The words, "Read it!" were part of her email--she wants us to look up the translation in Great Great Grandma's history.  Unfortunately, when we redid the kitchen, I put a bunch of stuff in the big upstairs bedroom, and now that's Jon's room.  Between his stuff and our stuff, its hard to find anything in there.  I do need to find and read it though.

Wow, thanks for sharing what President Holland said to you.  It was amazing!  Sunday after breakfast, Dad and I sat down with Katrina and Thomas and showed them a video that had Elder Holland speaking about missionary work called "Worthy to Be a Voice for God."  It was beautiful, and I hope it touched their hearts.

I especially liked what he said about the road to salvation always requiring sacrifice.  It reminds me of Doctrine and Covenants 122:8 "The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than he?"  I was studying about sacrifice a week or so ago.  Just now I am thinking that the sacrifice of Jesus Christ is the only true sacrifice, isn't it?  Anything we do, no matter how hard, may seem like a sacrifice, but it is always repaid a hundred fold.

A tornado hit Oklahoma City on Monday.  Don't worry, Uncle Allen and Aunt Becky are okay, but it has got to be a very hard time for them.  The tornado hit an elementary school full of children and ten were killed.  It is so sad.  Last night, there was a tornado watch in Cassandra's area.  She said at one point, the storm was really bad, and they got ready to hunker down in the bathroom, which is their only room without windows.  I haven't heard from her today, but I did talk to her after the worst was over, and they were fine.   Okay, I just got a text from her.  All's well.

Miriam got to talk to Preston on the phone yesterday and then again this morning.  Yesterday, he called the house and I gave him Miriam's new number.  He only had like a minute to talk to her.  Today he got to call again, and she had more presence of mind and was able to ask him how he's doing (fine) and what he needs her to bring him when she comes (electric razor).  She is going to his graduation early June.

I only have today to work and then I am done.  Hooray!  After that it's crunch time because of girl's camp and the cruise.  I really have tons to do.  The weather is beautiful!

May 7--Dear Elder Letter Installment

Dear Elder,

Hi!  Thanks for the letter.  I hope you got a chance to do more than scan my last letter, ha ha.  That's too bad about the people you couldn't baptize because one didn't go to church and the other didn't pay his tithing.  It's good to be sure they are committed to the gospel before baptizing anyone, that's for sure.

Today is Tuesday and I've been home from teaching for about 3 hours just getting things done.  Thomas is on the computer listening to "That Thing You Do" songs.  He'd better get busy with his trumpet, laundry, and English or he's not going to be able to walk down to main street with his friends to buy Hawaiian shaved ice.  I just told him that and he ran upstairs.  Now it's just me and the music.  I'm rocking out like Guy Patterson's mom on the movie, ha ha.  Katrina is upstairs chillin'; I have to get her to work.  Miriam will be home soon.  We are going to pick Dad up at the laundry and then go to visit with a college counselor so that Miriam can know what classes to take summer term.

Yesterday we had Preston's family over for dinner.  Dad had a great time swapping military stories with Chris, Preston's step dad, Miriam and I enjoyed visiting with Rebecca, Preston's mom, and Katrina and Thomas had fun keeping their three youngest kids entertained.  Their older girls weren't able to come.  Rebecca texted Miriam a couple of times on their way home last night saying how much they enjoyed the visit especially Chris who loved talking to Dad.  Everyone loves talking to your Dad, including me.  He is such an interesting guy!

Dad said that Cassandra called.  They still have no idea if Emerson will get the job closer to us, but they want us to check out houses for them just in case.  Dad told her we would.  Maybe we will do that tomorrow.  Wow, it's getting more and more exciting.  Emerson posted some videos of Lily on Facebook.  One was of her miniature golfing.  So cute!

April 28--Dear Elder: Letters from the Fam

Dear Matt,
So Katrina is yelling at me really loud right now because I am taking a long time to write this letter to you and she wants me to leave the downstairs so that she can practice her piano. I guess that I have to hurry up. I don’t see why she can’t practice her piano with me right here. It’s just the piano I mean come on. Well this week has kinda sucked because my grades are really bad and I haven’t been able to go to track because my knees and hip are hurting really bad, so I wouldn’t be able to compete very well even if I had went. But I still had fun with my friends. On Friday I went to my friends house and we did tons of things like breaking his tramp and going to the grocery store and the gas station and playing football and basketball and watching Spongebob. So that day was pretty fun. The rest of my week was boring and theres not much to tell you about. I better go because Katrina is yelling at me again. See Ya!
-Thomas

Dear Son,
So guess what?  I actually am taking the fam on a vacation, NOT to Disneyland, or anywhere I really want to go, but I actually listened to my darling children and decided to take them to the Shakespeare thingy, but only for a day because Miriam didn’t want to be there more than that, so then we will travel farther and have more fun, Man, I am getting soft in my old age.  A vacation should consist of me having fun and torturing my kids, HA HA.  To show you just how pathetically soft I have gone, I am thinking about getting into metal detecting, and since my kids have said they are interested in going too, instead of getting just one and then putting them off and never letting them do it while I have all of the fun, I am going to get two so that they can do it AT THE SAME TIME!!! Can you believe it?  Soon I might get totally kicked off the DARK SIDE!  BTW, I loved your letter, always love all of your letters, I actually hang on every word.  I know you are doing super awesome, even if you don’t always think so.  You are a wonderful missionary and make me proud!  I love you soo much.
Love,
Dad

Blog Note:  In her Letter, Katrina wrote that she is going to stay at the high school she is attending.  She also tells Matt that they got an "excellent" in the state drama competition.  She also asked a boy to the "Last Chance" dance.  No fun or frills, she just walked up and asked him.  He said yes, and then she came home to for money and permission, ha ha.  I remembering doing the same thing when I was a kid--first I asked the boy and picked out a dress, then I went home to ask my parents for money and permission.  Good thing neither they nor we said "no," or someone would have a lot of 'splainin' to do.

Matt,

Sorry about last week! Well, I do write Preston a lot but I am also in love with him and I'm going to marry him so you can't argue with that! Also, I write to you on my iPhone so the message looks way bigger. Sorry! How are you? I'm doing well! There's not much to tell. I work a lot.  Work takes up most of my time. Tell more stories about yourself!
Miriam
