Spring Break!

I always consider spring break as a mini summer run-through.  Last year spring break was a disaster—by it’s end, the house was in shambles, the budget was blown, and the mom was a nervous wreak. Last year’s summer proved to be the same, only more so—the worst summer on family record.  Thankfully, if this year’s spring break was any indication, our summer will be wonderful.

I wanted to work as well as play this spring break and we had a very nice combination of family work, family play, and free time.  Brian had to work most mornings, so we made that our work time, too.
Monday the kids and I worked in the house and then went out to work on the yard.  We weeded, raked, swept, and cleaned out the garden shed all ready for summer.  I can’t remember what we did in the afternoon, but I think it may have involved an extra long nap for Mom.  That evening was family home evening.  We ate left over roast for dinner, then played games, then played at a park, then got frosties at Wendy’s.  It was a very nice day.
Tuesday after cleaning the house, the kids and I went over to Grandma’s and helped in her yard.  We weeded, planted, and swept.  On the way home from Grandma’s we picked up a couple of movies (Tangled, and Sorcerer’s Apprentice) and a pizza for the kids.  Then, after another luciously long nap for me, we ate delicious Hawaiian haystacks made for the family by Matt and Miriam.  Afterwards Brian and I went walking along the trail down by the lake.  It was so nice to walk and talk together.
Wednesday after cleaning the house, the kids and I went over to Elizabeth’s and helped in her yard.  We weeded, raked, and swept.  Then we ate chicken sandwiches with her and her kids which was lots of fun.  Yes, I think I took a nice long nap on Wednesday, too.  No wonder I think it was such a nice spring break!  I spent the rest of the evening preparing for a meeting I had that night about day camp.  Miriam went over to a friend’s, and Brian too the two youngest kids to dinner.
Thursday after cleaning the house, we drove over to help out in the laundry.  We vacuumed, swept, and scrubbed.  Then we waited for Brian to finish working and we all went bowling.  May I say that none of us comes close to being bowling league material.  Luckily, the big screen was broken, so no one but us could see our pathetic scores.  Despite our lack of skill, we had a wonderful time.   We dropped Matt off at the mall to hang out with friends, picked up a pizza for the kids (again) and headed home.  Brian and I then went out again.  We needed to stay close to home in order to pick Thomas up from baseball practice, so we ate at Taco Bell in and then went to Walmart where we bought a trash can (how romantic!) and a treat.  After picking Thomas up, we went home and watched Tangled.
Friday after cleaning the house, we worked in our yard again. Three of the kids chose to work with me.  We weeded, pruned raspberries, and raked.  The child who didn’t work helped make a picnic lunch for everyone to enjoy when we were done.  When Brian got home we took the three younger kids to the school parking lot to practice driving.  They all did a wonderful job.  I, who had apparently not yet gotten enough sleep yet, crawled in the back to lay down.  Instead of sleeping though, I got to talk on the phone to Cassandra which was even better.  Then we took the kids to walk around some gardens, an atrium, and an emporium.  On the way home we got a treat and (of course) pizza for the kids.  That night Brian and I went out again—no wonder I thought it was such a wonderful spring break!—This time to my favorite restaurant where I ordered my favorite food –cream of broccoli soup, a dinner salad with their incredible ranch dressing, and garlic bread.  After that we came home and found that Matt had finished tuning up our bikes for us.  We were so excited!  Matt and I took them out for a spin and then Brian and I watched a movie.
Saturday, we didn’t do much work at all.  We just slept in and I took another nap.  Then Miriam, Katrina, Thomas, and I went to Elizabeth’s house and she helped us take in the dress Miriam is wearing to prom.  We had a very fun visit.  After that we picked up Brian and went for a nice long walk along the trail a ways up the canyon.  Then we bought the kids an early dinner (Nope, not pizza;  hot dogs!),  stopped at the book store to buy Miriam an ACT book, and came home.   Brian and I loaded our newly tuned-up bikes into the pick-up, drove to a sandwich shop for a bite to eat, and then drove to the mouth of the canyon, unloaded our bikes and rode the trail.  Bike riding is so nice because you can talk together while you ride.   After that we drove around and talked some more.   Also, Jonathan called that evening and it was wonderful to talk to him!
Well, that was our spring break.  The house is still standing, the finances are intact, and the mom is VERY well-rested.  Now it is Sunday—a day of spiritual rest.  We had a lesson on honesty and my goal is to change any picture on my blog that I am not sure is in public domain.
